A nice grant for Farm to Crafts
Farm to Crafts’ core team consists of initiator Cleo Maxime de Brabander, designer and farmer Gino Martina, and environmental scientist Cindy Eman. They are seeking solutions to challenges that farmers on the island face. Through this project, they aim to give the island’s manufacturing economy a significant boost, in close collaboration with local partners, and artisans and designers from home and abroad.
At a kick-off event, the first crops will be planted at Hofi Cas Cora, where the project has been allocated a stretch of land on which to experiment. On the same farm, a covered outdoor space has been set up as a venue for events. Throughout the year, the venue will host widely accessible workshops and presentations by regional and international designers about the potential of the harvest.
Farm to Crafts is profoundly aware of the emotionally charged and complex relationship between agriculture, crafts and colonial history. The organisation therefore seeks to take a forward-looking approach without forgetting the past and its lasting legacy. As part of this process, journalist Nelly Rosa plans to investigate the nature and implications of this relationship. Farm to Crafts will also demonstrate to a wide audience that agriculture remains a source of valuable raw materials, offering new perspectives for a more creative, sustainable and less dependent Curaçao.
